Something that surprised me when reading Kugle’s article was how the religion of Islam is considered as being one that is accepting to sexual pleasure. Kugle articulates how this openness to sexual pleasure also explains Islam’s openness to contraception. Based on my little prior knowledge of Islam and only seeing the religion as conservative, the idea that sexual pleasure and contraception is socially accepted was definitely eye opening. Kugle also points to the well-known fact that Western mass media definitely represents Islam as a “repressive religion” (p. 192). That being said, there are clearly many misconceptions within the West regarding the religion of Islam and Muslims particular customs. With this acceptance towards “sexual play… within established relationships” would definitely be seen as very surprising to a Western audience.
